What exactly is HOK® Activated Lignite?

A porous carbon sorbent produced by RWE in Germany from Rhenish lignite, activated continuously in a rotary hearth furnace (Herdofen — hence the name). It is used to adsorb contaminants from water and gas streams.

How does it differ from conventional activated carbon?

Mostly in production route and economics. Conventional carbons are typically batch-activated from purchased feedstocks; HOK® is produced continuously from freshly mined lignite at the source. That gives it a consistent character and a cost position suited to high-consumption duties.

Which grade should I evaluate?

As a rule of thumb: powder grades for dosing into biological stages, suspension treatment, and gas injection; granular grades for fixed beds and filters. The right starting point depends on your stream and equipment — that's the first thing we'll discuss. See product grades.

Is CGS Carbon the manufacturer?

No — and we're careful about the distinction. HOK® is manufactured by RWE in Germany. CGS Carbon supplies and distributes the product in North America and provides application support. Manufacturing claims trace to the manufacturer's documentation.

Can we get trial quantities before committing?

Yes. Trials typically start with big-bag quantities sized to your dosing rate, supported by the relevant datasheet and SDS. Tell us your duty and expected consumption and we'll propose a trial format.

How is the product delivered and stored?

Bulk silo-truck delivery for high-volume dosing, palletized big bags for standard duty, and containerized shipments for North American supply. Storage is conventional dry storage; the SDS covers handling requirements. See packaging & supply.

What quality assurance stands behind each delivery?

Production runs under an ISO 9001-certified quality system. The manufacturer samples the product multiple times daily and analyzes it in its own laboratory. Request the current datasheet for guaranteed values per grade.

Does HOK® treat PFAS?

We don't claim applications the manufacturer's documentation doesn't support. For PFAS-specific treatment, our parent company Birchtech offers dedicated activated carbon and ion-exchange solutions — we'll connect you to the right team.

Adsorption
The accumulation of dissolved or entrained substances on the internal surface of a porous solid. Distinct from absorption, where a substance is taken up into the bulk of a material.
Sorbent
The material doing the adsorbing — here, activated lignite.
Activated lignite
Lignite (brown coal) that has been thermally activated to develop internal porosity, producing a carbon sorbent.
Herdofen / rotary hearth furnace
The furnace in which HOK® is produced; carbonization and activation happen continuously in a single step.
BET surface area
A standard measure (m²/g) of a porous material's internal surface area, named for the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method.
PAC / GAC
Powdered and granular activated carbon — the two broad form factors. Powder is dosed and removed with sludge; granulate is packed into beds.
Fixed bed
A column or vessel packed with granular sorbent through which the stream flows; the bed is exchanged or regenerated once loaded.
Suspension treatment
Powdered sorbent stirred directly into the liquid, loaded, and then separated — flexible for variable contaminant loads.
Dosing
Metered addition of powdered sorbent into a treatment stage, typically the aeration basin of a biological plant.
Leachate
Water that has percolated through a landfill, carrying dissolved and suspended contaminants; a classic high-difficulty treatment stream.
Polishing
A final treatment stage that removes residual contaminants ahead of discharge or reuse.
SDS
Safety data sheet — the document governing safe handling, storage, and transport of a material.
